Microskills of Listening Comprehension

Distinguish word boundaries, recognize a core of words, and interpret word order patterns and their significance.

Level: Any Level
Activity: Take a short text (4-6 sentences, less than 80 words). Read the text to the class at normal speed but pause for five seconds between sentences. Students should take notes but focus on the information carrying words (e.g. car, attack, dangerous) not grammatical words (e.g. his, her, the, and). Read the text again. Now students get together in group and use their notes to rebuild the text as accurately as possible. Each group should have a secretary who writes the group the final version. After the students have rebuilt the text as best they can the learners and teachers compare and analyze their texts and the original.

Retain chunks of language of different lengths in short-term memory.
